About this interview:

How can we reconnect with natural cycles of rest and healing?

In this episode Amisha spends time with writer, radical yogini and eco-feminist activist Uma Dinsmore-Tuli.

Uma introduces us to her practise of Total Yoga Nidra, and shares what she has discovered about the natural cycles of rest in our human biology, psyche and the world around us. She speaks about her work supporting people to reconnect with the body’s natural healing impulse to rest, process and restore itself, and what causes us to lose that connection in the first place.

Uma explains why we must remember to value rest, the importance of dream time and natural awakening for our emotional processing and receiving soul wisdom, why napping has become a radical act, and what might happen if politicians took a nap before every major decision. Uma shares her experience of what happens when we unplug from the relentless demands of the 9-5 cycle of work and schooling, that wrenches us from sleep and turns the morning into a mad rush for so many families.

Together Uma and Amisha reflect on the importance for women of getting to know their bodies through their menstrual cycle and the cultural shift towards honouring and respecting the wisdom of our bodies. They share stories of learning about their menstrual cycles and what happens when we honour the seasons within us as well as the seasons outside. Finally they discuss post-lineage freedom from the disempowering constraints of old hierarchies of yoga teaching – bringing the precious teachings of the yoga traditions into the present moment, and seeking out the common threads of wisdom that underlie delineated structures of yoga practise.

“Techniques of liberation have been locking people into cages for years.” ~ Uma Dinsmore-Tuli

Uma met yoga in 1969, at the age of four, and fell in love. She’s been practicing ever since, and teaching yoga since 1994. A yoga therapist with special expertise in yoga therapy for women’s health, Uma is a mother of three, and has written four books on yoga for women, including the massive Yoni Shakti now in its second printing.

In 2005, Uma created the annual Santosa Living Yoga and Bhakti Camp, which now has sister camps in Ireland and Cornwall. She is co-founder of the Yoga Nidra Network and has developed Total Yoga Nidra, Wild Nidra and Nidra Shakti: radical creative and intuitive approaches to sharing yoga nidra.

Uma’s passion as a writer and as a teacher is to transmit the clarity of awareness, creativity and profound vitality nourished by yoga tantra. Her practice and teaching respects the cyclical powers of the living earth, and honours human life cycles as spiritual initiations (including conscious menstruation, menopause, birth and postnatal recovery).
